Treating Arthritis Symptoms with Aromatherapy
by Buffy Hall, RN

Did you know that the word “arthritis” actually refers to over 100 different diseases affecting areas in and around joints of the body?  Actually, arthritis also can also affect other parts of the body besides the joints. The skin, liver, heart and kidneys are all vulnerable to certain types of arthritis. It causes pain, loss of movement and joint swelling.

I have an intense and personal interest in this subject since I
was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis twenty two years ago.
But to be honest, I consider myself far luckier than many
arthritis sufferers. I am fairly mobile and reasonably energetic, have minimal joint deformity and swelling, and most days I experience no real pain at all. It is mostly due to a combination of my medication regimen and my aromatherapy, that I am in such good shape for someone with a chronic illness.

I haven’t always been this stable though. I’ve had several periods in my life where I was largely disabled. The RA led to the onset of fibromyalgia and I was forced to leave a career in nursing at age 33 because of the constant pain. The more I
worked, the worse it got until it was finally impossible for me to work the long hours anymore.

Instead I made a choice to concentrate my energy levels on being a stay at home mom to my two small children.  I quit work, the daily stress level dramatically lowered and I got better.  Today my son and daughter are 17 and 20 and a triumph of what
was the best decision that I ever made. You WAHMs and WAHDs know what I mean.

As an arthritic, I am not unique. I share the daily "What body part isn't working well today" experience with over 66 million people nationwide.

According to Arthritis Today magazine:
* In 2005, 1 in 3 adults and 300,000 children are affected by arthritis
* Arthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems and the nation’s leading cause of disability among Americans over age 15.
* More than 7 million Americans need help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing and walking
* Arthritis results in 39 million physician visits, half million
hospitalizations and costs the US economy more than $86.2 billion a year!
* Half of Americans with arthritis don’t think anything can be done to help them.

Common Types of Arthritis Osteoarthritis - a degenerative joint disease that is the most prevalent form of arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - an autoimmune disease that is one of the most serious and disabling types, affecting mostly women.

Juvenile Arthritis - a general term for all types of arthritis,
including rheumatoid and lupus, that occur in children.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus) - a serious disorder that
can inflame and damage joints and other connective tissues.

Fibromyalgia - in which widespread pain affects the muscles and attachments to the bone, causes extreme fatigue and sleep problems.

Aromatherapy is a natural holistic approach to health and wellness using plant derived scents that I use daily as a way to control the stresses in my life. All forms of arthritis are exacerbated or worsened by stress.  Controlling that aspect of
my life, even just a little, has made a world of difference in
my overall condition.

The traditional method of healing called aromatherapy is
finally beginning to be considered a science and is gaining ground among doctors willing to combine conventional medicine
with alternative therapies. This current switch among health
professionals is called “integrative medicine”. It is a move away from the traditional approach that focuses only on the disease and prescription drugs to an approach that looks more
at the individual who has the disease, and gives them a more active role in their treatment. This integrative approach has proved to be a virtual lifesaver for me and one that I strongly encourage other arthritis sufferers to try.

Some of the most effective essential oils for treatment of
arthritis symptoms are Lavender, Juniper, Thyme, Rosemary, Benzoe, Eucalyptus, Chamomile, Peppermint, Camphor, Ginger, Black Pepper and Lemon.

For the best relief from arthritis symptoms you can add the essential oils to the bath, massage them into your skin, or apply them in a compress. For application directly to the skin however, essential oils should be blended with a carrier oil
like almond, jojoba, apricot or even coconut oil to avoid skin irritation. You can also use aloe vera gel mixed with witch hazel for a clean, nonsticky absorbable rub.

Aromatherapy is a natural, safe and economical option to deal with the pain, stiffness, stress, anxiety and depression that often goes hand in hand with an arthritis diagnosis. The best thing of all though, is that aromatherapy has no negative side effects as so many of the conventional treatments and
medications do. It is also an excellent way to improve your
general outlook, your attitude and the quality of your life.

When you have arthritis, it can be a struggle to maintain your independence in your daily activities. With aromatherapy you have powerful tools to use for that purpose.

Aromatherapy should be used in addition to proper diet,
medications and mild exercise to manage your arthritic
condition. There is no magic bullet or cure yet for arthritis
but with aromatherapy, there is a way for you to take back some control over your life and health.  Aromatherapy is not intended to replace proven medical treatments or a medication regimen.

Beauty to Die For: Health Hazards of Cosmetics and Skin Care Products Revealed
by Dr. Connealy, MD, MPH

Your medicine cabinet is one of the most dangerous areas of your house, and not for the reasons you may think. Lurking just behind your bathroom mirror, where all of your favorite beauty products are housed, is a virtual toxic nightmare. The growing list of synthetic ingredients manufacturers add to their products is turning the most innocent-looking shampoos and moisturizers into cocktails of toxins that could cause cancer or reproductive damage over years of sustained use. Modern cosmetics contain a host of dangerous ingredients, which would be more at home in a test tube than in our bodies.

Like most people, you probably assume that the ingredients found in beauty products have been thoroughly tested for safety well before they land on your grocery store's shelves. After all, the government has regulations in place for the water we drink, the food we eat and the air we breathe. One would assume that the FDA would also be overseeing the cosmetic industry to ensure the health and safety of consumers. Unfortunately, the FDA has little power when it comes to regulating the ingredients found in your beauty products. In fact, the only people ensuring the safety of personal care products are the very people who govern the industry: The Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA). Scientists paid by the CTFA make up the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel (CIR) and are charged with regulating the safety of the industry's products.

In 2004, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) released the findings of a study it conducted regarding the safety of beauty care products. Comparing approximately 10,000 ingredients found in 7,500 different products against lists of known and suspected chemical health hazards, the research revealed that the CIR was falling tragically short of ensuring consumer safety.

Of the 7,500 products tested by the EWG, a mere 28 had been evaluated for safety by the CIR. The EWG found that one in every 120 products analyzed contained ingredients certified by the government as known or probable carcinogens and that nearly one-third of the products contained ingredients classified as possible carcinogens. Astoundingly, 54 products even violated recommendations for safe use that the CIR had put in place, yet these products are still available for sale today.

Of the products tested, the worst offenders were those containing the cancer-causing ingredients coal tar, alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids, and those containing the hormone-disrupting ingredient, phthalate.

Coal Tar

Seventy-one hair dye products evaluated were found to contain ingredients derived from coal tar (listed as FD&C or D&C on ingredients labels). Several studies have linked long-time hair dye use to bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

A research study conducted in 2001 by the USC School of Medicine found that women using permanent hair dye at least once a month more than doubled their risk of bladder cancer. The study estimates that "19 percent of bladder cancer in women in Los Angeles, California, may be attributed to permanent hair dye use."

A link between hair dye and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was established in 1992 when a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute found that 20 percent of all cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma may be linked to hair dye use.

While the FDA has not stepped in to prevent the use of coal tar in beauty products, it does advise consumers that reducing hair dye use will possibly reduce the risk of cancer.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) & Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA)

Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids are commonly used in products advertised to remove wrinkles, blemishes, blotches and acne scars. With consumer complaints of burning, swelling and pain associated with AHA and BHA flooding into the FDA, the regulatory body began conducting its own research about 15 years ago. The findings linked the use of AHA and BHA with a doubling of UV-induced skin damage and a potential increased risk of skin cancer.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, skin cancer has reached "epidemic proportions," with 1 million new cases occurring each year and one person dying every hour from the disease. The agency estimates that, at the current rate, one in five people will develop skin cancer over their lifetime.

The FDA's study findings were presented to the CIR, but the panel approved the continued use of AHA and BHA "in spite of serious safety questions submitted by a consumer group and a major manufacturer," according to an FDA spokesperson.

Even though one out of every 17 products analyzed by the EWG study contained either AHA or BHA (with nearly 10 percent being moisturizers and 6 percent sunscreens), the most that the FDA could do was suggest that products containing the ingredients carry a warning to use sunscreen and to limit sun exposure while using the product. A puzzling solution, since some of the products containing the dangerous ingredient are designed specifically for use in the sun.

Phthalates

Phthalates are industrial plasticizers widely used in personal care products to moisturize and soften skin, impart flexibility to nail polish after it dries and enhance the fragrances used in most products. Studies indicate that phthalates cause a wide range of birth defects and lifelong reproductive impairments, targeting every organ in the male reproductive system and causing problems ranging from low sperm count to serious genital deformities that can lead to an increased risk of cancer.

While the EWG only found four products with phthalate listed as an ingredient (all nail care products), there is no telling how many products actually contain it. The industry is not required to list fragrance ingredients or "trade secret" ingredients on products, and phthalates often fall into one of those two categories.

In September 2004, the European Union implemented a ban on all beauty products containing phthalates. California Assemblywoman Judy Chu has proposed a similar bill (AB 908) to be voted on later this year that would implement the same ban in the United States. Opponents of the bill, mainly the CTFA, argue that changing labeling processes would present a huge economic burden and could infringe on trade secrets. A similar bill failed just last year.

Four Steps of Action

1. Go to www.ewg.org and check out the health risks of your favorite products. EWG has compiled a guide of 7,500 beauty care products and has ranked them according to their ingredients' potential to cause cancer, trigger allergic reactions, interfere with the endocrine (hormonal) system, impair reproduction or damage a developing fetus.

2. Visit the FDA's website at www.fda.gov and familiarize yourself with the steps that you can take in order to file complaints or concerns about consumer products.

3. Visit www.safecosmetics.org to learn more about how you can become involved with bill AB 908 to ban phthalates in beauty products in the United States.

4. Check out my recommendations for all-natural and safe products for both you and your family at www.scmedicalcenter.com. All products mentioned have been used safely and with wonderful results by my patients for years.

Dr. Connealy, M.D., M.P.H., began private practice in 1986. In 1992, she founded South Coast Medical Center for New Medicine where she serves as medical director. Her practice is firmly based in the belief that strictly treating health problems with medications does not find the root cause of the illness. Dr. Connealy writes monthly columns for Coast and OC Health magazines, and is a bi-weekly guest on Frank Jordan's "Healthy" radio show. A Natural Treatment for Eczema
by Buffy Hall, RN

Since eczema severely dries out your skin, the most direct treatment is to help your skin regain it’s capacity for moisture retention. But just slapping on a moisturizer won’t do the job, especially if it is a commercial brand of moisturizer.

Commercial lotions contain chemicals that can actually cause eczema outbreaks because they either are not absorbable and clog the pores of the skin or they dry out and irritate the skin. Once you apply a lotion, the skin cells are temporarily rehydrated but then they just as quickly lose the moisture again.

What you need is a substance that can work to restore elasticity to the skin cells themselves. As you restore the elasticity, healing begins at the cellular level and the cells get better able to retain the moisture and keep it from
escaping.

Shea Butter is a wonderful agent for revitalizing your skin cells so that they regain their moisture retention capacity! It is absorbed very rapidly into the skin and penetrates all the skin layers.

Shea has an extremely high unremovable fatty acid content - something that is indispensable for moisturizing and adding elasticity back into the skin. The percentage of unremovable fatty acids in shea butter is even higher than the percentage in cocoa butter and all other vegetable butters. This makes shea butter the naturally better choice for your eczema treatment.

Shea Butter also has natural vitamin A and E and anti-inflammatory capabilities, has been clinically proven to increase the healing rate of burns and surface wounds and actually reduces scarring. It also gives your skin natural UV protection and forms a barrier against smoke and pollutants in
the air that damage skin.

Using natural skin care products that contain shea butter in a cream or lotion form will allow you to deliver the most important healing ingredient straight to the skin cells. When mixed with herbs or essential oils such as lavender, calendula and chamomile, shea works together with them synergistically to increase their own anti-inflammatory effects and carry them through to the skin layers.

Modern medicine is quickly catching on to the benefits of shea butter and more doctors are prescribing it’s use all the time.  The greatest benefit is that there are no side effects to the use of shea butter so it is safe for you to try for yourself.

But be careful of commercial lotions that advertise the presence of shea in their formulas! Read the labels carefully-the lotion may very well contain some percentage of shea butter in it's formula but they will also contain chemicals or preservatives that completely negate the positive effects of
the shea on your skin.

Who is better to heal problem skin than Mother Nature anyway?  She has provided us with the number one natural healing and moisturizing substance on the planet. It is to your advantage to use natural skin care products that contain shea butter to regain control of your skin’s health over the pain, itching and dryness of eczema.

Your Home is a Toxic Waste Dump!
by Brenda Hoffman

Did you know that the household and beauty products that you purchase at your local store are unhealthy for your family? You probably don't know this because the chemical and manufacturing industries don't have to provide us with this information. Of course, many of these chemicals were originally intended to enhance our lifestyles. However, you really need to know that these "life-enhancing" products are actually polluting our health and environment. Your continued good health depends upon knowing this truth. This way you can limit your exposure to these toxic chemicals.

One of the largest indoor pollutants that is found in our homes is formaldehyde which is found in antiperspirants, mouthwash, toothpaste, floor waxes, and furniture polishes and causes allergies, cancer, immune system failings, and asthma.

Another major indoor pollutant are phenols. This pollutant can be absorbed by both your lungs and your skin and result in caustic burns, kidney and liver damage and hyperactivity. Phenols are found in acne medications and mouthwash.

Some other items that you need to be cautious of include Dawn Dishwashing Detergent which is the #1 cause of accidental poisoning in the USA, Tide which contains lye is the #1 polluter of our homes, and Off bug spray contains DEET which causes seizures. Other products to beware of include Lysol, Fantastik, Formula 409, Pine-Sol, Pledge, Spic & Span, Tilex, Ajax, Speed Stick, Secret, Johnson's, Joy, Windex, Palmolive, Shout, Spray & Wash, Palmolive, Lever, Irish Spring, Jergens, Crest, Listerine, Arm & Hammer, Colgate, Scope, Old English and Dove. As you can see, these are a lot of major brand cleaners and beauty products.

What exactly do these products do? They can cause a list of symptoms including: a delay in the onset of puberty, cancer, excessive fatigue, heart palpitations, insomnia, night sweats, hormonal imbalances, unusual skin rashes, swollen glands, digestive problems, nausea, diarrhea, muscle and joint pain, heart disease, irritability, aggression, impaired memory and concentration, auditory and visual perception, the onset of allergies, asthma, birth defects, and noise intolerance. They can also adversely affect the nervous system reducing emotional well being, mental alertness, coordination and other functions associated with intelligence. Toxic chemicals also increase the symptoms of any existing conditions.

Your home is a toxic waste dump! The average home contains 62 toxic chemicals. Less than 2% of these chemicals have actually been tested for long-term effects. Now that you know the truth, I encourage you to start doing something about it!
